Elder Props freebies

New on Archive.org… Elder Props (1981), an 84 page compendium of printable pages, presumably for use as photocopies made as RPG game prompts and elements. The artist has a nice clean toony ink style, which I like a lot.

If you wanted these in colour, look at Krita’s 4.0’s new ability to auto-paint line-art.

I see that the same book can also be downloaded from the site of the artist for free, though there’s it’s confusing labelled Evil Dead, which makes one think of tiresome video-nasty zombies movies of the 1980s rather than the Neconomicon.

The artist is still working, and has a similar product for the awesome Gravity Falls series. Also free Fonts…

Vanquish Fantasy

Propnomicon has discovered J.S. Sullivan’s Vanquish Fantasy Font, a pseudo-exotic calligraphic font that has a usefully indefinable air of ‘east of Alhazred’ about it. It’s only for “non-commercial use” though, so can’t be used for a comic, game or card-set — unless you first come to an arrangement with the font’s maker.

Looking through Sullivan’s DeviantArt gallery I see he has a similar script font, Banish, under the same license.

If you need free + commercial use then Font Squirrel is your main clearing-house and catalogue.

Lovely new Lovecraftian font, hand made by Stapleton McTavish, free, and with .ttf and source code.

cthulhuian_font_with_working_file_by_stapletonmctavish

It shows up in Photoshop’s font-list under ‘C’, as “Cthulhuian”.

Personal use only (with credit), but commercial uses can be negotiated with the maker.

[Update: no longer free, now sold]

Ann Megg Arbotante’s Tentacle Alphabet (2013), which doesn’t yet appear to have become a digitised font… a Kickstarter needed to make it so, perhaps?

Antique fonts

The Fell Types as open-source Truetype fonts by Ignio Marini. So named because they were imported by John Fell of the Oxford University Press, from Holland circa 1670–1672, to bypass government interference in printing. As Propnomicon says, they’re excellent for “faux antique” documents.

After install they turn up not under “F”, but under “I”, as ‘IM Fell Types’.

In the same vein is the display caps font “LP Aspen Cam”, but where you’d obtain it now I’m not sure. It seems to have completely vanished from the web.
